Damage your new MacBook: Five reasons not to
Category: Apple,Laptop Brands,News | October 17th, 2008
Previous Apple MacBook Pro’s have been considerably durable; they have survived heat, cold, and humidity, so this piece isn’t about the durability of Apple MacBooks in general but more that the newer generation Apple Macbooks seem to hold a little more risk. So what follows are a few reasons why you may wish to treat your Apple Mac with a little more care.
A: The glass screen if damaged is irreparable. If damaged it can’t just be replaced as it has to be fused into the entire upper half, which has an estimated cost of around $500.00.
B: If dented, the unibody design means you can’t simply replace just the dented area. With the old white MacBooks if they received a dent you could simply replace the panel, but now if you happen to inflict a dent in it for some reason, you’re talking about a whole new “brick” with an estimated cost of $250.00.
C: If you spill something on it, it will tell on you. Because the bottom of the keypad and top of the trackpad have inbuilt moisture sensors, if you accidentally spill something on them and they are tripped, when sending the unit for repair they will know, so no point denying it. Estimated cost would be the cost or replacement or a quarter of the resale value.
D: The keyboard is virtually impossible to fix or replace. The reason for this is between you and the keys is every other component in the MacBook, so get too much of anything in there and you’ll be unscrewing about eighty screws to gain access. Estimated cost will be either do it yourself which will probably end with breakage or $150.00 to get it done professionally.
E: Lastly comes the shame. The first guy to actually crack his MacBook screen is going to go down in history, and will probably be laughed at forever and the same goes for the keyboard and dents too. Every laptop blog and news site will have the poor guy splattered over their pages, so don’t dare be the first.
That’s it, hope you enjoyed this.
