China cyber attacks presidential campaigns

Category: News | November 9th, 2008

According to US cyber experts, the suspect that a cyber attack on the Obama and McCain campaign computer networks that happened this summer came from China. Earlier in summer Barack Obama and John McCain’s campaign teams were warned by the FBI and Secret Service that their networks had been compromised by foreign hackers.

Official investigators confirmed the cyber attack had originated from China, but do not know if it was government backed. The cyber hackers successfully downloaded large quantities of information from both presidential runners’ networks.

The Secret Service and FBI alerted the campaigns after a government team tasked with detecting cyber attacks detected the security breaches. Both campaigns then hired private cyber security companies to fix the breaches.
