Are laptops better than Desktops?

Category: Desktop PC, Laptop Brands | March 10th, 2009

The laptop and desktop computers have always been rivals, so which is better the Laptop or the desktop computer? Obviously the main advantage of choosing a laptop is of course obvious, it can be carried around anywhere, while the desktop has to say on the desk.

But is portability the only real advantage over desktop units? One could well say the desktop unit has an advantage over a laptop when it comes to screen size, as when you get fed up with that 15 inch monitor you can always purchase a larger one, something you can’t do with a laptop.

I would say if you work in an office then possible the desktop commands but if your work takes you on the road then the laptop comes into its own field.

So are laptops better than desktop? Drop me a comment letting me know your views.

James.

  1. Desktops are a dying breed, the same way that reel-to-reel tapes died out after the introduction of the compact cassette… the mainstream just want machines that work and are easy to house - laptops are those beasts. The power/performance of a modern laptop is more than the majority of users desire or need, and it is now keeping pace with advances in software use in all areas. They are even increasing the performance to encompass the needs of the final holdouts - the gamers and graphics fiends - it is just a matter of time.

The limitation referred to above - of the screen issue or even the keyboard issue - are not real. In fact the laptop is the source of the explosion of multi-screen goodness by many users extending the desktop to an external 22 or 24 inch display in addition to the 7 to 17 inches that you get on a laptop today. The newer digital display port technologies are further pushing it to two extra or more screens - all from the laptop. The keyboard - well that is a simple issue to have an external keyboard and mouse through USB.

Throw in also the wonderful advantage that a laptop is computing with a built-in UPS, in the world of less stable electricity distribution that is expected over the coming decade (certainly in Europe), then it can be seen that the writing is on the wall for the ‘desktop’. There will be holdouts, but increasingly they will be seen to be the wierd ones - just like someone who today lovingly looks after his reel-to-reel quarter inch tape machine.
