USAF gets ultra-secure version of Windows XP
Category: News | May 4th, 2009

Although Microsoft Windows 7 is garnering all the attention, Microsoft is pushing out XP in an ultra-secure version for the United States Air Force. Apparently the custom build of Windows XP ships with in excess of 600 setting locked down and a security patch turnaround of 72 hours.
This is mainly due to Steve Ballmer stepping in and approving the XP project for the USAF at their request. Word is 85% of previously known exploits have been blocked while support call volume has dropped some 40%.
The USAF has also saved a cool $100 million in costs, a good saving. Unfortunately though Microsoft will not be selling the ultra-secure version of Windows XP to us ordinary mortals.

Wow… I really thought the USAF was smarter than this… Looks like I was wrong.
Windows isn’t good enough for my local hospital, which is running just about everything on Solaris, and Windows isn’t good enough for the NYSE, which is running on Red Hat Linux, Windows isn’t good enough for the NSA, or the French police, but its good enough for the USAF ?
Now there’s reason to be afraid…
