3DeeScreen to Transform 2D laptop into 3D without glasses

Category: Software News | February 8th, 2012

If you’ve wanted to climb aboard the 3D bandwagon but have found the cost of a glasses-free 3DTV prohibitive then there may be a solution in hand. How about a screen that snaps onto a laptop running Windows 7 that will turn 2D images into 3D, all without the need for 3D glasses?

That’s exactly what Spatial View has come up with and it’s called the 3DeeScreen for use with 15.6-inch laptops. Whereas with previous attempts using this type of solution the user had to sit within a limited viewing zone the 3DeeScreen utilizes eye-tracking software, which automatically adjusts to the viewers chosen lounging position and reduces ghosting and crosstalk. Chris Chinook, Inside Media president said in the official press release on this article, “One of the issues with glasses-free 3D displays are the discrete viewing zones. In typical glasses-free displays, users must keep their head very still or experience a blurry transition area while finding the next viewing zone. The Spatial View approach of eye-tracking eliminates these issues by providing a 3D view independent of head position.”

The 3DeeScreen simply snaps onto your laptop and once the software is installed you can then view 3D videos and photos and also view blu-ray movies through a third-party player. A compatible media library dubbed 3DeeCentral is also in development. The one-stop hub app is included with the 3DeeScreen and will offer both free and paid content. As well as this an SDK (software developer’s kit) is available for third-party application developers. The first adopters of the kit, available from Spatial View, have been blu-ray software player developers so it seems that Spatial View has thought of everything.

The 3DeeScreen certainly sounds interesting then and at $129.99 a pop you might want to try it out. More makes and models of laptops that are compatible will be added every month and at present Dell and HP 15.6-inch Windows 7 laptops with 1080p and 720p support the 3DeeScreen. You can either purchase through Amazon or from Spatial View here.

A 3DeeScreen is also available for the iPhone at $29.99 and you can read much more about that here. What are your thoughts on the 3DeeScreen for laptops to enable glasses-free 3D viewing? Let us know by sending your comments.
