Nice laptop, but it’s heavy enough
Comment by PHP Encoder — February 18, 2008 @ 2:30 pm
Yes it is heavy but worse: Battery life is rubbish, no manual and not found on net either. Works no faster than my old machine despite a million gigathingies. The system uses all the stuff up and leaves user no better off than before. Disappointing but as salesmen in Currys can only read the box not much help there either. Now, is that libel, slander or truth? Just my little joke - alledgedly

the laptop is straight-forward to use there’s nothing spectacular about using it or other basic laptops running a windows based os. the slim design lends credence to it’s newly evolved status however the chasis’ flimsy design means that it feels like it would break if one didn’t take due care and attention when transporting it around. vista uses most of 1 gigabyte of ram so it is a welcome addition to have 2 gigabytes onboard, the 120 gigabyte hard drive is easily filled so the onboard dvd rw is a must, an additional external hard drive of 1 terabyte should ensure a good operational life for this machine until the quad core and higher specification machines are mainstream.

I have just bough this laptop and its a great piece of equipment fro £400 (PC World).
It may need an external hard drive or other online storage for masses of photos/music however I have 40 albums and 1200 photos and only used half my memory we have another laptop by sony cos £1400 and it dos no more than my Advent apart from a built in camera and micrphone.
Definitly a good buy.

Just bought this 2 weeks ago and am having a hard time with the loudness of the cooling fan. have been getting annoyed looks from others in the library, and it can be really disruptive when watching a movie. Anyone else having this issue or is it a fault with mine?? And as Donny commented above, no manual to know what to do with the random button on the laptop that has a fan symbol on it.

Hi guys. I bought this laptop from Pc World about a month or so, and I have to say I am very impressed. Its good value for money and a fancy piece of equipment. Sure it’s not the lightest of notebooks to carry around, but at the same time it’s not the heaviest either. I find it to work very quickly when using applications, and shutting down and starting Windows Vista.
The fan as the above poster said is kinda loud and distracting, but luckily it comes with a fan button next to the power switch that reduces the fan noise ” problem solved “, though the down side to that is that it reduces the CPU power at the same time.
All in all it’s a good laptop and worth every penny spent. I would recommend this to anyone thinking of purchasing it.

Mine seems to get too hot. On three occasions it has just turned itself off suddenly. Perhaps it is overheating. There is no explanation of what the fan button is for. I can’t hear a fan with it pushed in or out, so don’t know what to do with the button.
Also irritating is the function and control buttons are the opposite way round to what I’m used to so it makes a mess of cutting a pasting.
Other than that it seems a reasonable laptop for the price.

This computer is rubbish. The main problem is it is soooo sslllloooooowwwwwww. My work computer has half the RAM and a normal processor and it is significantly faster than this machine. I also carried out a microsoft rating on the machine and it came out at 3.1 out of 10 that says it all. Won’t be buying an Advent computer again - but if you pay £400 for a computer what do you expect I suppose.

Just bought this Advent 9617 a month ago (reconditioned) and have been very impressed. I’d definitely buy reconditioned again, it appears exactly the same as a new one would be. I haven’t had the same troubles that the other reviewers seem to have had, the fan is the same volume as any other laptop I’ve used. Definitely worth the money, and it starts up quickly. The 17″ screen looks huge if you’re used to a square screen, and is great for films. As for space, I haven’t used even a quarter of it and I have 160 albums on there and 2000 photos. Also, external hard drives are so cheap now it doesn’t really matter if you do fill it up. Definitely worth the £289 I paid, but perhaps get a smaller screen model if you’re strapped for cash. 2Gb RAM is very handy, especially when running Windows Vista. Processor seems very fast for a 1.6Ghz (or whatever it is).
If you can’t decide what Laptop to buy, get this one or a similar reconditioned one with the same spec, and you won’t be disappointed.

An absolutely fantastic budget laptop…
Just bought it from PC World for £205 (Ex Display).
I have been using it non stop without any problems. It’s very quick for a laptop at this price, and do not have any problems with the fan. It does get a little loud occasionally for a very short period of time, but nothing that I cannot put up with.
It’s large screen size and weight does not make it the most portable laptop, but I did not buy it to take around with me and is only going to be used at home as a second computer. This makes it perfect for my needs.

I wrote a good review about this laptop a few weeks ago, but now I must recind it. It has started to shut down for no reason (it’s not overheating). Also the DVD drive keeps malfunctioning, causing the laptop to crash and restart.
If these problems are permanently fixed it will still be a great laptop, but it seems that lots of people have experienced this problem so maybe it’s a design fault.

RUBBISH! mine’s hard drive failed when it was 2 months old… took me ages to get them to replace it they kept saying it was my fault… excuse me! i have had a desktop for 7 years with no problem and i dont/ didnt (as its failed again) do anything that i didnt do with the desktop on XP! also, the laptop had MORE security and maintenance software on it! yes of course it must be my fault(!) IDIOTS! the battery also only lasted for 20mins at best since i got it! now have to get it repaired AGAIN! thank god for the 1 year warranty! never buy from Currys again… “its no our problem” um, yes it is YOU sold me a faulty laptop! DELL next time!

After sending my Laptop back the first time, it was returned to me with a note saying “Tested for over-heating - no fault found”. Therefore, if the fault wasn’t due to overheating, why was it not investigated further instead of being sent back to me?! I sent it back a second time and the motherboard was replaced, now it works fine. Good standard of customer service overall, but should really have been sorted in 1 return rather than 2.
Can’t complain about the remote support though, I would recommend Currys to a friend.
