Laptop Operating System: What should I choose?

The laptop I have has Vista on it, I am not very clever when it comes to technology but I am hearing about Windows 7 which will be launching sooner or later, can I change to Windows 7 on my laptop getting rid of Vista? Just so you know I hate Vista but as you know most laptops now come with Vista installed.
