Ubuntu and Soundcards Support Problems

As an early adopter of Ubuntu I have found real problems with support for sound and wireless cards from the ALSA who have not rolled-out sufficient user support for varied hardware.
So far I have tried everything that the great Ubuntu community has come up with to no avail. This is something that must be addressed if Linux is ever going to be widely adopted.
