Via based Mini-laptop produced by Sony? Quite possibly.

It appears that Sony is about to enter the low-cost netbook mini-laptop arena, as at the WiMax Expo, which is being held alongside Computex; at the Quanta booth, they had what appeared to be a generic prototype based on the Via OpenBook. It appears that it is powered by a 1.6GHz Via C7-M processor, what was enlightening about this though was it has Sony as the manufacturer on the machine.

And apparently, when this fact was pointed out to the Quanta executive who was manning their booth, he immediately closed down the properties window, and offered no explanation as to why Sony was listed as the manufacturer.

Unfortunately Sony executives were no at hand at the time to comment either.
Quanta are the world’s largest maker of laptop computers, and produced for many of the world’s biggest brand names, and as would be expect are bound by contract not to discuss its customers. So if this prototype laptop is being produced by Sony it is obviously a noteworthy boost for Via.
