I have had several laptops now averaging one per year, mainly used for business purposes such as word excel and the odd publisher programs, I also used them on the move quite a bit be it train or car etc. My findings are:
Advent laptops cheap but break avoid
Acer laptops good value for money and tend to be reliable
Toshiba laptops look good but wireless internet on them disaster they tend to use a Toshiba system to connect which is not the easiest way from my findings
HP very good windows based laptops probably the one I would buy if I wanted a windows based system
Apple wow what a difference get one of these with the office package for macs. you will not be disappointed ease of use they even look cool too.
as for the processors with the kind of stuff I do not noticed any difference in speeds but have noticed the AMD processors when running windows operating systems are slower than my HP with Intel processor even though the speeds are supposed to be the same
set a budget and buy a branded laptop for that keep clear of Dell and Advent go for a big company like HP Acer or Apple.
hope this helps

What a silly thread….. it would be better if you described what you mean by ‘best’
I would use my laptop for some things, you may use it for others, so each would view ours as best perhaps and the others as worst. For example I travel a lot and therefore need a lightweight laptop with a long life battery, but you want an all singing and all dancing multimedia desktop replacement laptop. We are not going to agree on one that fits both descriptions clearly.
ps the guy that said Advent laptops break - I have had an Advent laptop for about 3 years and nothing has ever gone wrong with it. The components may not be of the same quality as my HP, but it is handy to leave at my girlfriends and at a price that I’m not going to be overly concerned if we break up and she destroys it (though I seriously doubt she would).

Hi all
I have worked in pc technical support for more than 12 years now, i have read many forums, i can tell you this:
NEC, Toshiba, Acer, Sony and IBM are good manufacturers.
They have been around the business for a long time.
Nothing they make is bad, they got the best of the best.
Dell, got good options, good only for those who are well versed in technology.
HP, they try, but i don’t know why.
Compaq, a sturdy machine. Its good old days are behind now.
Fujitsu-Siemens, I think they will be the best one day.
Of course, the mac, i haven’t used one for myself, because i develop many things in the span of an hour. But the general impression one gets from all the postings on the net, that the mac is the most favorable one.
